From 1 July 2026, important changes came into effect for Supported Independent Living (SIL) providers across Australia. These changes are designed to improve the quality, safety, and consistency of SIL services, giving NDIS participants greater confidence in the providers supporting them.
If you are currently receiving Supported Independent Living through Ability to Achieve, there is good news. There is nothing you need to do.
Ability to Achieve is already a registered NDIS provider and continues to meet the standards required to deliver high quality SIL support. Your current support, funding, and daily routines remain unchanged.
If you are with another provider and are unsure how these changes affect you, this guide explains everything you need to know.
What are the new SIL registration rules?
The Australian Government has introduced mandatory registration requirements for all providers delivering Supported Independent Living services under the NDIS.
From 1 July 2026, all providers delivering SIL supports must either:
- Be a registered NDIS provider, or
- Have submitted an application for registration by 1 October 2026.
Providers that do not register or apply by the deadline will no longer be able to continue delivering Supported Independent Living services after 30 September 2026. These reforms have been introduced to strengthen participant safeguards and improve the overall quality of SIL services across Australia.
Why are these changes being introduced?
Supported Independent Living provides ongoing assistance to people with higher support needs, often involving 24-hour support within a shared home environment.
Because SIL is considered a higher-risk support, the NDIS has introduced mandatory registration to ensure providers consistently meet strict quality and safeguarding requirements. Registered providers are required to demonstrate compliance with the NDIS Practice Standards, undergo independent audits, maintain worker screening requirements, and meet ongoing reporting obligations.
These changes are designed to give participants and their families greater confidence in the services they receive.
What does this mean if you’re already with Ability to Achieve?
Very little.
Ability to Achieve is already a registered NDIS provider, meaning we already operate within the standards expected by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.
Your:
- NDIS funding
- SIL supports
- Support workers
- Daily routines
- Home arrangements
all continue as normal.
There is no action required from you simply because these new registration requirements have been introduced.
Our focus remains exactly the same as it has always been, providing high-quality Supported Independent Living that helps participants build independence while feeling safe, supported, and valued.
What if my current SIL provider isn’t registered?
If you’re not currently with Ability to Achieve, now is a good time to ask your provider about their registration status.
If your provider has decided not to register, or has not submitted an application before the required deadline, they may no longer be able to continue delivering Supported Independent Living services after the transition period.
While this can feel overwhelming, it doesn’t mean you’ll lose your NDIS funding or your SIL support.
Instead, you’ll need to transition to a provider that meets the new registration requirements.
Changing SIL providers doesn’t change your NDIS plan
One of the biggest concerns participants have is whether changing providers affects their NDIS funding.
In most cases, the answer is no.
Changing your SIL provider does not change your existing NDIS plan or funding. Your support remains funded under your approved plan. The main difference is simply who is delivering those supports.
This means you can move to a registered provider while maintaining continuity of support and working towards a smooth transition.
