Our workers take their responsibility for the safety, welfare, and well-being of the child/children they supervise very seriously. Immediate Needs Assessment: When a child enters our care, we conduct a thorough assessment of their immediate needs, encompassing physical health, emotional well-being, and any trauma they may have experienced.
Safe and Supportive Environment: We ensure that the home we provide is safe and welcoming. We furnish the child with their own space, belongings, and a sense of security, with 24-hour staff availability. We maintain consistency by using the same staff on a rotating roster to minimise disruptions.
Trauma-Informed Care: We recognise that many foster children have experienced trauma. We implement trauma-informed care practices to create an environment that promotes healing and emotional stability.
Therapeutic Support: We provide the child with a therapist or counselor who specializes in trauma and attachment issues. Regular therapy sessions help the child cope with their past experiences and develop healthy coping mechanisms.
How We Help After a Foster Care Placement Breakdown:
Immediate Reassessment: When a placement breaks down, we promptly reassess the child's needs and emotional state. They may be experiencing a sense of loss and instability.
Transitional Support: We offer respite care while the foster care agency finds a suitable long-term placement.
Communication and Consistency: We maintain open lines of communication with the child. We explain the reasons for the placement change in an age-appropriate manner and uphold consistency in previous caregivers and routines to provide stability.
Support for Foster Parents: We offer support and guidance to foster parents who may be feeling overwhelmed or discouraged after a placement breakdown. We provide access to training and resources.
Educational Continuity: We ensure that educational needs are addressed during placement transitions. We collaborate with schools to maintain continuity in the child's education.
Ongoing Support for Foster Children:
Emotional Support: Foster children need continuous emotional support to navigate the challenges they face. We encourage them to express their feelings and provide a safe space for them to do so.
Advocacy: We advocate for the child's needs within the foster care system, including access to necessary services, healthcare, and education.
Mentorship and Life Skills: We offer mentorship and life skills training to older foster youth, helping them prepare for independent living and adulthood.
Legal Support: We ensure that the child has access to legal representation and advocacy when needed, especially during court proceedings.

The translation of the words Kohanga Reo is ‘language nest’. This translation relates directly to one of the key objectives of the Kohanga Reo movement – the retention of the Maori language.
Kohanga Reo immerses children in the Maori language and culture to promote learning within a context/situation that is relevant to the children and draws on Maori learning and teaching styles.
10-18 years This program encourages Rangatahi to participate, express and showcase their Polynesian heritage through Kapa Haka, Maori Culture, History & Contemporary Maori Arts.
